The Order wants to kill all abominations, such as witches, vampires, but later on in time, those who live a life that their religious beliefs do not allow。 Such as Nicky’s lifestyle and choice of partner in Scared Shiftless! Voodoo Academy has Annabelle who is possessed by a soul some two hundred years old called Isabelle, who has strong magical powers。 She is enrolled at the academy to help train her to deal with the Loa Kalfu, after a run in with him at a crossroads, whilst he was possessing a student of the academy。 Lots to learn about Loa and Voodoo, as she has to learn to master her powers and keep herself and Isabelle safe。 Wyrmriders Ascending sees Joni travel down to the home of her Fomorian ancestors, in the hope of saving her son Merlin, who has a really important role to play in the future。 She soon gets involved with huge creatures called Wyrms, similar in kind to dragons born of fire and air, but born of air and water。 She is famed to be the first Wyrmrider, with the wyrms able to create voids and travel through time and place。 But she finds herself having to try and defeat the void bringer, partly brought about by her attempt to save her son, with the aid of the mer king and her merlegion。 The Druid’s Dance starts with an ordinary boy, Elijah Wadsworth, who loses all of his family in a house fire, leaving him being brought up by his parent’s friends。 He has some strange things happen to him over the years, from about two years after his family’s deaths and after。 Years later he finds out that his very existence is part of history and ancient legends。 He has manifested some really strange powers and abilities and his childhood friends Tyler and Emilie try to help him come to terms with it, but it is much bigger than just him。 Add in the Tree of Life, the Wayward Tree, the Morrigan, even Joni from the Wyrmrider tales and her son Merlin, and you begin to see how everything is interconnected。 The books are a great example of the series you can read from this author, with lots of interconnecting characters that you can see develop over the different books。 A fascinating way in which to get started with each series and this starter library gives you a brilliant taste for each。 I am lucky enough to have read most of this books separately already, but I still had a couple I haven’t managed to find the time to read until now。 Absolutely loved this way of getting to know an author and their books, all in one go。 I received an ARC copy of this collection from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinions of these books above。 。。。more

First things first, this is without a doubt the best library starter ever seen……and you should not skip it at any cost 😉 Secondly, you could just skip this review, get the set, and begin to read 😊 But as I know we are all very interested in reviews…。。The “Gates of Eden Starter Library” compiles into a single volume the first volumes into each of (to-date!) the five different series authored by into a single volume the first volumes into each of (to-date!) the five different series authored by Theophilus Monroe, with the added bonus of “Rise of the Morrigan” a prequel to the whole universe。 As all five series are linked to one and the same literary verse, the compilation offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the verse with different (though still connected) approaches。 Monroe’s original “Gates of Eden” universe loosely borrows Arthurian tropes and transfers them organically into a modern urban fantasy that spans centuries, crossing realms and blurs the boundaries between reality and legend and transforms them into a veritable smørrebrød of action, unexpected twists, wonderful characters and mind-blowing descriptions, garnished with a good dose of magic some sprinkles of mythical lore and some paranormal romance on the side, and served with very well-crafted, with an accurate world building, interesting characters, captivating writing style and carefully editing。 Theophilus Monroe has an uncanny gift to transform mythical sources into vibrant, modern, and yet timeless fantasy。 Every time he outdoes himself, working like a genie, able to construct a buffet of various very different tropes, that shouldn’t fit with each and yet fit to perfection。 Like the clocks on world famous Dali’s “Persistence of Memory”, Monroe’s stories warp out in a surreal canopy of visual sensation that, just as Dali’s painting, has a realistic, perfect, and exact story at its core。 However, the real genie consists in captivating the reader at first sentence, with a tale that will have you holding your breath for extended periods of time, and will entice you from the very first page with full-fleshed characters, credible and relatable, a riveting plot, mesmerizing twists, all wrapped up in perfect delivered in Monroe’s carefully constructed narrative, and captivating writing style。There is one single, if nanoscopic, word of caution though…。。 once you enter this verse, it will be almost impossible to leave, but – and this is the best news ever 😉 you get the first books in the five series, for less that the coffee to keeping you awake will cost… because believe me, putting the lecture down is a rather futile undertake。As you seem to have made it so far… thanks by the way… you can decide for yourself, read a short review of each book or pick the set and start reading by yourself… because picking it you should, this is a too good opportunity to pass on!Druids Dance (Gates of Eden #1)Elijah is the sole survivor of the fire that killed his whole family when he was barely a child。 Years later Elijah has become a capable young man about to graduate high school and become a legal adult, and with adulthood Elijah also receives his surprising inheritance。 Elijah is the heir of some centuries-old-lineage of wizards that have been fighting the creatures of lore for ages。 As his powers begin to wake, some hard facts come to light (his family death, was not accident), and a mysterious girl (Celtic fans would recognize her immediately 😊) follows him relentlessly trying to gain his support in the upcoming battle to save the world, until Elijah is forced to make a choice, with appalling consequences。A very interesting story, well-written, with unseen situations and twists, adventure, romance, magical bits, and fantasy, with a fast-moving plot when the action demands it, and a much more moderate pace in the portions of the tale that explore Elijah’s past and character in more dept。 Elijah himself is an unusual hero and a welcomed MC, that allows us for once to witness the process of teens maturing into adults from a male point of view。 into a fully enjoyable book cover to cover。Wyrmrider Ascending (The Fomorian Wyrmriders #1)The story takes place both, in Fomoria, the underwater kingdom situated at the bottom of the ocean and New Orleans, and offers an extraordinary blend of action, adventure, mythology, dark and witty humor as well as its lighter counterpart。 Joni Campbell is a relatable and very credible main character, who downplays her own feelings and empathy with healthy doses of sassiness and dark humor, who takes life in stride, for lack of a better option and manages to win the fight to battle another day 😉。Monroe has an uncanny gift to transform mythical sources into vibrant, modern, and yet timeless fantasy, making each and any of his characters unique。 However, Joni Campbell must be the most original of them all, after this tale, you will never look at any sea-creature the same again (neither Disney’s Arielle by the way)。 Monroe’ skill in having the readers holding their breath for extended periods of time, seems specially fitting while visiting this underwater world😉。Voodoo Academy (The Voodoo Legacy #1)Combining a solid knowledge of VooDoo and general urban fantasy tropes the series offers a good overview on VooDoo lore for the informed reader without overwhelmed those who are only interesting in the story as a fantasy plot for pure entertainment。 This in itself is already a huge accomplishment。 Theopilus Monroe has masterfully succeeded in throwing the right amount of facts and fiction into the mix to create a series that is highly entertaining while still handling the Voodoo world with the deserved respect and using the Voodoo-Verse as a metaphor for adolescence。Annabelle Mulledy has been possessed by the spirit of Isabelle since her childhood。 Isabelle a former slave girl, have picked some very interesting abilities since her own death, which gives Annabelle an edge when interacting with “otherworldly” situations。 In “Voodoo Academy” Annabelle draws the attention of an evil loa, Kalfu, who hopes to steal Annabelle’s supernatural abilities for himself, much to Annabelle’s detriment。 When the Loa of War, Ogoun, intervenes recruiting her into the Voodoo Academy, it seems she has gained a powerful ally in the fight against Kalfu, but soon Annabelle will be throwing out between the fences, asking herself whether Ogoun motives are as clear as it appears。Bloody Hell (The Legacy of a Vampire Witch #1)This series focuses on Mercy Brown, a witch/vampire hybrid who has already played a pivotal role in “The Voodoo Legacy”。 Mercy Brown is a heartless ageless witch who ‘managed’ to died twice and keep on living, literally。 Back at the end of the nineteenth century, Mercy felt her own death nearing (she was terminal ill with consumption) and decided to change her own fate, approaching a witch for a live remedy, which turned out to be ‘live changing’ and transformed her into a vampire。 Her father decided to put an end to such blasphemy by literally cut her heart out, however Mercy didn’t stay death, own knowledge of Witchcraft enable her to bound her soul to her own brother and keep on (un)living。 Nevertheless, Mercy cannot take a breath (pun intended 😊) because the Orden of the Morning Dawn will stop at nothing to make her a truly forever dead…。。 no, I’m not telling anything else…。 Go and read by yourself。。。。 you can help me later…Scared Shiftless (The Legend of Nyx #1)Nyx is water elemental and human predator, whose MO consist in using its shapeshifting abilities to take on the most alluring form for its intended victims, to attract them and consume them, a consummated killer by nature。 Unfortunately, the last victim stole Nyx shapeshifting powers, letting Nyx trapped into a male body, which is as worse as it gets, because Nyx, regardless of appearances is a female at core。 Now Nyx is not only stuck into a human body, but the also the wrong identity, forced to navigate the human world, to interact, even sympathize with her former victims, while dodging all kind of prejudice and discrimination。 Monroe utilizes Nyx story to further delve into the theme, allowing the reader to understand and relate to Nyx’ everyday struggles and approach – always in exquisite, elegant and respectful manner issues of identity, social pressure, religious bigotry, and acceptance。Furthermore, Monroe uses his highly original style to criticize societal norms without ever for a nanosecond forget his very first intention: to entertain the reader to the fullest。 The story moves effortless while Nyx takes the reader forward into her quest to find the vampire that stole her shifter ability and finally regain her identity, while plots and subplots flow into each other to form a rich tapestry of unexpected twist and turns, and Nyx slowly realize that finding that vampire is only the first step into a much wider picture。Rise of the Morrigan。 Queen of Samhuinn (Prequel to the Gates of Eden)This is a stand-alone epic fantasy story, that also acts as a prequel to all the series located into Monroe’s own original “Gates of Eden” verse。 “Rise of the Morrigan” combines fundamental tropes of Irish mythology to spin a brand-new tale that incorporates both epic tale and modern myth into a captivating story that entices the reader from start to finish, with credible full-fleshed characters, a riveting plot, mesmerizing twists and well-written, carefully constructed narrative, and perfect delivery。 Irish mythology in general - Dagda, Morrigan and Cú Chulainn in particular - this a story that aims high, and could have easily miss the target, but due to Monroe’s genius does not。 Cú Chulainn (who – for full disclosure – happens to be one of my heroes) transforms into a werewolf, and I’m not in the slightest mad。 Monroe has an uncanny gift to transform mythical sources into vibrant, modern, and yet timeless fantasy。 This book couldn’t be better, even if I’m still getting over ‘werewolf’ Cú Chulainn 😉 。。。more
